Restormel, one of Cornwall’s finest castles, was begun in about 1200 by Robert de Cardinham who was responsible for the sturdy shell-keep with its crenellations and sentry walk.

Seen from the air, the strength and simplicity of Restormel are revealed. The sub-stantial gate house is on the right of the keep, and the chapel opposite.

Robert de Cardinham is credited with constructing the great circular shell-keep of Restormel in about 1200. Its walls are nine feet thick and about twenty-seven feet high, carrying a sentry walk and crenellations. The domestic rooms were immediately inside the wall, and at first were made of timber; they were replaced by stone rooms in the time of Richard, Earl of Cornwall, which considerably improved the domestic accommodation. Wider windows were added, the chapel was built out over the ditch, and a new gate house was installed. The flat ground to the west, where visitors usually come from the car park, is the site of the old bailey.

When the Duchy of Cornwall was created in 1337, the keep contained a hall, three chambers and three upper chambers, and there were more rooms in the bailey to cater for staff and others. Even in ruins Restormel was so well sited that, centuries later in the Civil War, it still proved formidable.
